Network Principles

Learn Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) as a Cisco proprietary Layer 3 IP switching technology. CEF optimizes network performance and scalability for networks with large and dynamic traffic patterns, such as the Internet. IP Fragmentation is an Internet Protocol (IP) process that breaks packets into smaller pieces (fragments), so that the resulting pieces can pass through a link with a smaller maximum transmission unit (MTU) than the original packet size. UDP is a simpler, connectionless Internet protocol. Multiple messages are sent as packets in chunksryption and compression.

Layer3 Technologies

Identify IPv4 addressing and subnetting, Address types (Unicast, broadcast, multicast, and VLSM). The ARP stands for the address resolution protocol is the telecommunication protocol. This ARP is mostly used to convert the IP address to the physical address like Ethernet address. A DHCP relay agent is any host that forwards DHCP packets between clients and servers.

A DHCP device which joins a LAN goes through a couple different steps before it can communicate with other devices on the network. IPv6 packet is 128 bits long. It will have basic packet header, and optional extension header. Static routes are commonly used when routing from a network to a stub (a network with a single route) network.

Infrastructure Security

Learn What AAA stands for – Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting. Authentication provides the method of identifying users, primarily using login and password.

Authorization provides authorization for access to network resources. Accounting is carried out by logging of session statistics and usage information and is used for authorization control, billing, trend analysis, resource utilization, and capacity planning activities.

An authentication and accounting system used by many Internet Service Providers (ISPs). TACACS+ is a security application that provides centralized validation of users attempting to gain access to a router or network access server.

Layer2 Technologies

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is a Layer 2 protocol (Data-link layer) used on serial links in a Wide Area Network (WAN). PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, a network protocol for encapsulating Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames inside Ethernet frames. PPPoE is a networking protocol that also offers essential networking features, like authentication, encryption and compression. Frame Relay is a WAN protocol that operates at the physical and data link layers of the OSI reference model.

VPN Technologies

Learn how to configure and verify GRE. Tunneling provides a mechanism to transport packets of one protocol within another protocol. The Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN) feature allows users to better scale large and small IPSec VPNs by combining generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnels, IPSec encryption, and Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP). EVN is an IP-based virtualization technology that provides end-to-end virtualization over Layer-3 networks.

Infrastructure Services

Learn SNMPv2 and SNMPv3. The security level determines if an SNMP message needs to be protected from disclosure and if the message needs to be authenticated. Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a networking protocol designed to time-synchronize device with in a network.

Usually, Dynamic NAT is implemented, where a pool of public IP addresses is shared by an entire private IP subnet. IPv6 NAT helps to translate IPv4 addresses to IPv6 addresses of network devices.

IPv6 NAT also helps to translate the address between IPv6 hosts. IPv6 NAT supports source NAT, destination NAT, and static NAT. NAT-PT was the original translation scheme for communication between IPv4 and IPv6, but has since been deprecated and replaced by NAT64.

Layer2 Technologies

Learn how to configure and verify switch administration. SDM stands for Switching Database Manager. SDM templates are used to manage the system resources on a switch to their appropriate location and usability on the network for specific features.

The MAC address table contains address information that the switch uses to forward traffic between ports. All MAC addresses in the address table are associated with one or more ports. A VLAN is a group of devices on one or more logically segmented LANs. All devices working on a VLAN will have same broadcast domain.

DHCP snooping is a layer 2 security technology built into the operating system of a capable network switch that drops DHCP traffic determined to be  unacceptable. IPSG helps to prevent IP spoofing, which is when an attacker claims the IP address of a server or device on your network.

Dynamic ARP inspection (DAI) is a security feature that rejects invalid and malicious ARP packets. DAI is a security feature that validates ARP packets in a network. DAI intercepts, logs, and discards ARP packets with invalid IP-to-MAC address bindings.

Network Principles

Network maintenance basically means you have to do what it takes in order to keep a network up and running and it includes a number of tasks. Choosing which network maintenance model you will use depends on your network and the business. You can also use them as a template to create your own network maintenance model. SNMPv3 is similar to SNMPv1 or SNMPv2 but has a completely different security model.

SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 use a community-string that is used as the password and there’s no authentication or encryption. NTP (Network Time Protocol) is used to allow network devices to synchronize their clocks with a central source clock. For network devices like routers, switches or firewalls this is very important because we want to make sure that logging information and timestamps have the accurate time and date.

Layer3 Technologies

In this lesson we’ll take a look RIP, an old distance vector routing protocol that uses hop count as its metric. Unlike OSPF or EIGRP, RIP doesn’t establish a neighbor adjacency. Most of the RIP troubleshooting issues are about missing routing information. EIGRP is an advanced distance vector routing protocol that has to establish a neighbor relationship before updates are sent. This lesson covers OSPF and all the different things that could possibly go wrong.

OSPF is unlike EIGRP a link-state protocol but what they share in common is that both routing protocols establish a neighbor adjacency before exchanging routing information. BGP is a complex routing protocol and there are quite some things that could go possibly wrong. Besides being complex it’s also completely different compared to our IGPs (OSPF and EIGRP). In this lesson we’ll take a look how to solve inter-VLAN routing issues. Here’s the topology we will use.

IPv6

In this lesson we’ll take a look at some OSPFv3 neighbor adjacency issues. Most of what you learned about OSPFv3 for IPv4 also applies to OSPFv3. Let’s take a look at the first issue! We will take a look how to troubleshoot an automatic IPv6 6to4 tunnel. Redistribution for IPv6 is pretty similar to IPv4, the same rules and issues apply here. There is however one issue that only applies to IPv6 redistribution which I will show you here.

Layer2 Technologies

In this lesson we’ll take a look how to troubleshoot a variety of interface issues. Let’s walk through a couple of scenarios. In a previous lesson we explained some of the possible interface issues that we can encounter. Once you verified that your interface(s) are configured correctly and you are still having issues, the problem might be related to VLANs & Trunks. Let’s take a look at some common issues and how to solve them.

Out of the box spanning-tree does a fine job creating a loop-free topology. There are a number of things that could go wrong, maybe you expect a certain output but your switches are telling you something different. Most of the issues with Etherchannels (Link Aggregation) are because of misconfiguration. Keep in mind that the configuration of all physical interfaces has to match.

Network Services

In this lesson we’ll take a look at some common NAT (Network Address Translation / PAT (Port Address Translation) issues. The configuration of NAT / PAT on Cisco IOS routers is pretty straight-forward but there are some issues. Troubleshooting DHCP is normally pretty straight forward. Most issues are related to configuration errors (wrong DHCP pools and such). In this lesson I want to show you two DHCP related issues that are a bit harder to solve.

We’ll take a look at troubleshooting HSRP. We will demonstrate one issue but the methodology to troubleshoot it can be used for a variety of HSRP issues. In this lesson we’ll take a look at troubleshooting NTP (Network Time Protocol). NTP is an important protocol to use since it ensures our logging information has the correct time and

date.
